Pratt Institute Dormitory

Brooklyn, NY
In collaboration with Andrew Martens

The dormitory functions programmatically and materially to foster a circulatory system which is presented as antithetical in comparison to projects in the immediate area. Movement in between facets of the program is organized with a heavy emphasis on networks of circumnavigatory movement nested within one another. This combined with a heavy-handed application of sectional transparency begets a constant awareness of one’s position holistically, as well as an understanding of the varying scales of peripheral containment

The load-bearing building envelope functions through a language of load-expression, and emphasizes the depths of the layered fields that lie within the building. The facade additionally adds a feeling of lightness and overlaying of opacity which raises a separate and continuing interest in a structure. This lightness lends itself to the typological refutement to the developed vernacular of Brooklyn housing.
