The celebrated historian, Carlos F. Duarte, has written a handsome volume using this title: ''Without a doubt'', he writes, ''primitive painting in Venezuela during the Colonial period, popular or naive, developed enormously". Although it is now impossible to prove how many artists were dedicated to this type of expression, it is known that their production was very high, possibly immeasurable. Many of these testimonials have disappeared, owing to negligence or rejection of the past imposed upon us by political mechanisms that appeared following the War of Independence. Those diminutive panels or canvases that now impress and move us with their pure, sincere messages constitute a true mirror of social and cultural events in Venezuela.

Duarte ha escrito un hermoso volumen, "Sin lugar a dudas" -escribe él- "la pintura primitiva, popular o ingenua en Venezuela, durante la época colonial, tuvo un gran desarrollo. Aunque es imposible constatar ahora el número de artistas que se dedicaron a este género de expresión, se sabe que el monto de sus producciones fue muy alto e incalculable... Muchos de estos testimonios han desaparecido por incuria o por el rechazo hacia el pasado que nos fue impuesto por mecanismos políticos que surgieron después de la Guerra de Independencia...
