A monumental work, well-known here and abroad, whose main achievement can be synthesized into five important contributions: the reevaluation and characterization of paintings produced in Venezuela or that arrived in Venezuela from the 16th century to the end of the 18th; the knowledge of social conditions and techniques of the artists during that comprehensive period; the publication of unedited paintings that allow the reader to visually follow the concerns of the author; the stylistic references that link our colonial painters with different predominant European trends, and finally, the enormous documentation that alone justifies the publication of this book.

Obra monumental, ampliamente reconocida nacional e internacionalmente, sus principales logros pueden ser sintetizados en cinco grandes contribuciones: la revalorización y caracterización de la pintura realizada en Venezuela o llegada a ella desde el siglo XVI a las postrimerías del XVIII; el conocimiento de las condiciones sociales y de las técnicas de los artistas de ese período tan dilatado; la publicación de imágenes inéditas que permiten al lector seguir visualmente las consideraciones del autor; las referencias estilísticas que vinculan a nuestros pintores coloniales con distintas tendencias predominantes europeas, y, por último, el enorme aparato documental que por sí solo ya justificaría la edición de este libro.

The history of painting in Venezuela started by Alfredo Boulton in a previous volume almost from the time of the Conquest, is continued in this book. It embraces the period from the birth of Venezuela's independence, with its stylistic incertitudes set in the earlier patterns of the colonial period (such as neo-classicism and the former vestiges of modified Baroque), to the period of the Circulo de Bellas Artes, bringing the author into the first decades of this century, including a study of Reveronian works. Boulton's methodology permits the reader to become acquainted, not only with the works of Venezuela's great artists who subscribed to the romanticism and current of the European academies of the 1900's, but with the very important support that the ''artist-naturalist-traveler'', such as Bellerman and Goering, afforded the fine arts of the nation.

La historia de la pintura en Venezuela, iniciada por Alfredo Boulton, en otro tomo, prácticamente desde la época de la Conquista, prosigue en este volumen que abarca desde los albores del período independentista, con sus indecisiones estilísticas entre las anteriores pautas coloniales (como el neoclasicismo y algunos epigonales vestigios de un barroco atemperado), hasta el Círculo de Bellas Artes, adentrándose el autor no pocas décadas en nuestro siglo, ya que incluye el estudio de la obra reveroniana. La metodología de Boulton permite al lector conocer no sólo la obra de nuestros grandes y notorios artistas adscritos al romanticismo y al acedemicismo decimonónicos europeos, sino el medio cultural de la época, así como el importantísimo aporte que a la plástica nacional brindaron los "artistas-naturalistas-viajeros", como Bellerman y Goering.

A pictorial history in Venezuela from the forerunners of the Circulo de Bellas Artes to the end of the 70s, is analyzed with a historic propriety that surpasses the particular and individual, although certainly without diminishing its importance. The author interprets artistic evolution through extensive stylistic, periodization categories that mutually intersect and reinforce to achieve a discourse - duly accompanied by illustrations chosen for their representations - allowing an explanation of the artistic activity of those painters studied or cited, from more general historic, stylistic examples. The volume concludes with an extensive repertoire of biographic and bibliographic references.

El quehacer pictórico en Venezuela, desde los antecedentes del Círculo de Bellas Artes hasta el final de la década de los años 70, es analizado con una propiedad histórica que sobrepasa lo particular e individual, aunque ciertamente sin disminuir su importancia, para interpretar la evolución artística a través de amplias categorías estilísticas y periodizaciones que se intersectan y se refuerzan mutuamente a fin de lograr un discurso -debidamente acompañado de ilustraciones escogidas por su representatividad- que permite la explicación de la actividad artística particular de los pintores estudiados o citados, desde pautas histórico-estilísticas más generales. El volumen concluye con un extenso repertorio de referencias biográficas y bibliográficas.
