As César Rengifo points out so well in his preface, "this book, with its ample and coherent graphic testimony on the works of Carlos Otero, together with testimony as to what he observed and how he lived, constitutes an extremely valuable contribution to our knowledge of the plastic arts in Venezuela during the early decades of the 20th century." His works, executed during a long productive life, are of singular importance to the plastic arts. Faithful to his vocation as a newspaperman, Ratto-Ciarlo creates an especially vivacious dialogue where it is often the artist who speaks, and a testimonial, by the transcription of letters, decrees and fragments of books related to Otero, or by the unedited, exact aspects of his ''petite histoire'' which, well-employed as it is in this book, helps the reader to more fully comprehend the artist and his times.

Fiel a su vocación periodística, Ratto-Ciarlo compone una obra de especial vivacidad interlocutiva -a menudo es el artista quien habla- y testimonial sea por la transcripción de cartas, decretos y fragmentos de libros relacionados con Otero, sea a través de aspectos inéditos y minuciosos, de esa "petite histoire" que cuando es bien empleada, como en este caso, tanto ayuda a comprender mejor a un artista y a su época.
