Art and Nature - Gertie Paez Pate

Arte y Naturaleza - Gertie Paez Pate

Author / Autor: Various

The splendor of the flora and fauna of Venezuela, are two subjects very popular among Venezuelan artists. They are also subjects that have forever captured the attention of travelers and foreign scientists, amongst whom one of the most important is Alexander von Humboldt who explored a great part of Venezuela, leaving us an abundant literary and artistic heritage. Gertie experimented a similar sensation of wonder when she came to Caracas, adding to her paintings a feminine grace and a talented professional knowledge.

Paul Gauguin, whose mother was Peruvian, believed that art proceeds from the spirit and makes use of nature. Gertie, who grew up in a Peru, found in Venezuela a perfect environment where she would capture nature in her art, using different combinations of color, transmitting its images to canvas.

The style of Gertie reminded the publisher of Gauguin, who during his stay in Tahiti discovered primitive art with its impressive tropical color. He wrote that “nature leads us to art”, as it appears to have done in Gertie’s case.
