The author, in this book, recognizes fairly and maturely the great Zulian painter, Julio Arraga, whose works had not yet been analyzed in enough in-depth detail. Arraga was the first artist to follow impressionism in Venezuela, several years before Emilio Boggio and Samys Mutzner arrived in the country. This was probably due to the learning that he acquired in Florence from the macchiaioli, such as Segantini, Fattori, and Signorini, during a trip to Italy between 1896 and 1897. In addition to the stylistic evolution of Arraga, calzadilla bestows a special charm to this volume, thanks to the pictoric expedient of placing often old photographs, on the same theme, next to urban or rural scenes created by the artist.

Justo y madurado reconocimiento hace el autor de este libro al gran pintor zuliano Julio Arraga, cuya obra no había sido analizada todavía con suficiente extensión y detalle. Arraga fue el primer artista en asumir la tendencia del impresionismo en Venezuela, varios años antes de la llegada al país de Emilio Boggio y Samys Mutzner, debido muy probablemente al temprano conocimiento que tuvo en Florencia de la obra de los macchiaioli como Segantini, Fattori y Signorini, durante su viaje a Italia entre 1896 y 1897. Además de la evolución estilística de Arraga, Calzadilla confiere un encanto especial al volumen gracias al recurso iconográfico de colocar, con mucha frecuencia, al lado del paisaje urbano o rural creado por el artista, viejas fotografías que registran los mismos motivos.
