The customary use and the crafts derived from clay are particular to different regions of Venezuela, with similar characteristics that have descended from Indian and Spanish heritages. Those occupations arose, generally speaking, where the resource material provides - in a generous manner - the direct feasibility for its use. Proof positive is the presence of these livelihoods in the state of Lara, a zone rich with abundant clay fields. To trace the survival of clay, a journey has been undertaken, starting with Teodora Torrealba, "master" of earthenware and vital hub of an accomplishment that refuses to disappear. This book provides the opportunity to walk paths in the area surrounding Teodora; pictures and conservations have been gathered from those who have followed in her footsteps. Finally, the reader arrives at Miguel Angel Peraza, the last station on the journey. Miguel Angel, as he confesses, takes shelter in the spirit of the ancient clay handlers to leap toward other mental images of the craft. |
