The publication of Pottery and Porcelains in Venezuela by Manuel Rafael Rivero, without a doubt, has been a huge success. Valued for its beautiful illustrations, the tastefully-edited book, with excellent plates of pottery and porcelain pieces, captures the reader's attention from the moment the book is opened. It is a visual delight. Naturally, the text is the most interesting aspect of the book because it combines research and critical analysis. The author was obliged to begin by finding the material that he was going to present, selecting it from official and private collections. Afterwards, in order to study it, origins had to be traced, how and when the ware arrived in Venezuela had to be uncovered. This has been a sensitive task, carried out by oral traditions that were come by, documented sources such as wills and distribution of goods, commercial records of ships that reached Venezuela (published information, of a general nature, and that devoted to the study of maritime commerce, especially what is known of pottery and porcelains). However, this indispensable compilation of knowledge fortunately does not affect the pleasant style that Dr. Manuel Rafael Rivero uses to guide us on this voyage to the land of porcelains.

Un indudable acierto ha sido la publicación del libro del doctor Manuel Rafael Rivero, Lozas y Porcelanas en Venezuela. La edición, del mejor gusto, está valorizada por preciosas láminas que guían la atención del lector hacia las piezas de loza o de porcelana que desde que abrimos el libro son un deleite para la vista. Pero el texto es naturalmente lo más interesante de esta obra, que es de investigación y de crítica a la vez. Su autor debió de comenzar por encontrar y seleccionar, en colecciones oficiales y particulares, el material que iba a presentarnos. Y después, para estudiarlo, rastrear su procedencia y descubrir cómo y cuándo llegó a Venezuela, ha hecho asimismo un delicado trabajo a través de las tradiciones orales que pudo conseguir, y en las fuentes documentales de testamentarias y particiones de bienes, en los registros de los barcos que llegaban a nuestros puertos, en las obras impresas de carácter general y en las dedicadas a estudiar el comercio marítimo con nuestro país o las lozas y porcelanas específicamente. Pero este indispensable acopio de erudición no afectó afortunadamente el estilo elegante y ameno con que el doctor Manuel Rafael Rivero nos conduce en este viaje por un paós de porcelanas.
