This is a history of the religious devotion of the people of Venezuela, from its historic origins to the present. It describes the process by which religion (originally brought by Franciscan priests, tenacious and persistent in their missionary work and evangelization) is affirmed, dictated by the deeds of the saints, circulated from the churches first built of straw and mud, later constructed of tiles and stone. Everything is a toponym, a way to identify the place where the Venezuelan builds his home, his hacienda, the place where he (or his children) lives, even to his death and final resting place. Venezuela is full of Saint Francises, as well as Saint Antonys, Saint Peters, Saint Josephs. Sometimes the name given by the priest was lost and what remained was the name the Indian used for himself or for a river, hill, valley, mountain, plain, a bend of the ocean: Caigüa, Mucuchies, Marigüitar, Capacho, Guasdualito, Unare, Jadacaquiva, Orinoco, Coquivacoa, Tacarigua, Isnotü, Cospe, Teques, Caracas.

Este libro es la historia de las advocaciones o devociones del pueblo de Venezuela, desde sus orígenes históricos más antiguos hasta hoy. Describe el proceso a través del cual se afirma la religión traída originalmente por sacerdotes franciscanos tenaces y persistentes en la obra misionera y evangelizadora, impone a través de los hechos de los santos propagados desde iglesias de paja y barro como fueron las primeras que se construyeron hasta las fabricadas de teja y piedra, toda una toponimia, una manera de identificar los sitios donde el venezolano construye su casa, su hacienda, el lugar de su vida, de sus hijos, de su muerte, de su reposo final. De San Franciscos está llena la geografía de Venezuela, como a su vez se repiten tantos San Antonios, San Pedros, San Josés. A veces se perdió el nombre que impuso el fraile y quedó el nombre que el indígena usó para llamarse a sí mismo o para llamar al río, la colina, el valle, la montaña, el llano, el recodo del mar: Caigüa, Mucuchíes, Marigüitar, Capacho, Guasdualito, Unare, Jadacaquiva, Orinoco, Coquivacoa, Tacarigua, Isnotú, Cospe, Teques, Caracas.
