This book, unique in Venezuela, systematically and scientifically focuses on the history of apparel worn by the different social classes living in Venezuela from the 16th century up to the first fifteen years of the 19th century. The study is accurately presented and in detail: the first fifty years of the 16th century; the second half; the 17th century; the first fifty years of the 18th century (between 1750 and 1780 and 1800); finally, between 1800 and 1815. This is followed by a study of the military uniforms used by the different battalions of Caracas and other cities; the apparel worn by magistrates, town councilors, doormen, mace-bearers, prelates, that of religious orders, military, clergy, bull-fighters, costumes, etc; without overlooking the clothing used by slaves and servants. A supplement to this research carried out in archives here and abroad, is presented with a view toward the art of dressmaking during the Colony, a biographic catalogue of tailors. Perhaps even more important, is the extensive detailed vocabulary of clothing and accessories, supported by accurate documentation, ubicating their usage and origin. To accommplish this, endless lists of clothing from early wills had to be annotated, their contents had to be broken down to create a statistical card index which could shed light on the appearance of each piece of clothing or fabric, its particular use, what modifications were made in the course of time and its disappearance. In addition, this study is reinforced by more than 150 excellent color illustrations whose singularity lies in the fact that most are original photographs of local personages of the period, many never before published. Of themselves, these photographs constitute a complete history of photography. This theme, like that of apparel, has never been studied so seriously, nor so thoroughly.

Este libro, único en su especie dentro de la historiografía venezolana y único también en la del continente americano, enfoca sistemática y científicamente, la historia del traje que usaron las distintas clases sociales que habitaron el territorio nacional desde el siglo XVI hasta los primeros quince años del siglo XIX, ambientada en su marco histórico. Allí, con precisión y detalle se estudia el traje civil en la primera mitad del siglo XVI; en la segunda mitad del mismo siglo; en el siglo XVII, en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, entre 1750 y 1780, entre 1780 y 1800 y finalmente entre 1800 y 1815. Luego le sigue el estudio de los uniformes militares de los distintos batallones de Caracas y otras ciudades del interior del país; los uniformes de regidores, cabildantes, porteros, maceros, auditores, de las órdenes religiosas y militares, del clero, de los toreros, disfraces, etc.; sin olvidar el traje de los esclavos y criados.
El complemento de esta investigación, llevada a cabo en los archivos nacionales y extranjeros, se da una visión del arte de la sastrería durante la Epoca Colonial venezolana, un catálogo biográfico de sastres y quizá lo más importante: un extenso y pormenorizado vocabulario de prendas de vestir y otro de géneros utilizados en ellas; todo ello respaldado por una documentación precisa que ubica el uso y origen de las mismas. Para ello fue necesario copiar interminables listas de ropas de las antiguas testamentarias locales y desglosar su contenido para formar un fichero estadístico que arrojara luz sobre la aparición de cada prenda o tela, su uso particular, modificaciones sufridas en el transcurso del tiempo y su desaparición.
Este estudio está apoyado además por más de 150 ilustraciones excelentes, en color, cuya particularidad reside en que la mayoría son retratos originales de personajes locales de ese período, muchos de ellos nunca publicados y que vienen a formar indiscretamente una completa historia del retrato, tema que como el del traje jamás fue tocado de forma tan seria y amplia.
