The expression which Rafael Pineda appropriately used for the title of the book comes from a pottery dealer in the state of Lara, who was attempting to explain the procedures and objectives of the profession. It summarizes what earth has meant in each and every town, during whatever era, molded and baked in an open oven, or kiln; that is to say, turned into a piece of ceramic, the way a raw material is transformed into an object of a culture. This book also covers other aspects of the multiple artisan and artistic activities in Venezuela as they have developed from Pre-Columbian times to the present. There is ample photographic documentation of the works of active ceramists today, the traditional ones, and those who use more sophisticated techniques.

La expresión con la cual muy apropiadamente Rafael Pineda tituló este libro, proviene de un cacharrero del estado Lara que, tratando de explicar los procedimientos y objetivos de su oficio, resumió así lo que en todos los pueblos y en todas las épocas ha sido, la tierra ya moldeada y cocida al fuego abierto o cerrado, es decir, hecha cerámica, el modo de transformar la materia en objetos de la cultura. El libro recoge asimismo otros aspectos de la múltiple actividad artesanal y artística de Venezuela, como se ha desarrollado desde los tiempos precolombinos hasta el presente. Amplia documentación fotográfica de la obra de los ceramistas activos hoy, los tradicionales y los que usan las técnicas más sofisticadas.
