"This is not a catalogue of all the retables made during the Colonial period in Venezuela, it is simply a sampling of those that contain the most significant characteristics, created by the most representative masters, and those that we classify as popular works, invested many times with an awkwardness of interpretation which, even though they indicate an exisiting mental distance between the execution and comprehension of the models, expose a transforming ingenuousness full of archaistic charm and, at the same time, a naive sensitivity."
Carlos F. Duarte presents the "History and Evolution of Retables in the Province of Venezuela". It is serious research where the erudite and dialectic blend harmoniously. The complete process that gave rise to the appearance of retables in the country is described. This phenomenon has been written into the cabinetmaking of the Spanish period, in which "the section referring to altar construction deserves special attention". In Venezuela, the expression of this craft's major significance is found precisely in that type of furnishing.
Paradoxically, the markedly architectonic character of its designs has inspired more than a few facades of religious buildings. Duarte underlines the differences that exist between our retables and those of Mexico, or Peru: "The images", he says, "whether painted or sculpted, always retain their own individuality. Although they form part of the work itself, they are not to be confused with them. The case is different with the exhuberant Mexican or Peruvian retables, where the painted or sculpted works merge with the wood carving, forming an invisible piece, so to speak. For this reason, it can be affirmed that the retables of Venezuela have their own characteristics".

"Este no es un catálogo de todos los retablos hechos durante el período colonial en Venezuela. Es sólo una muestra de los que reúnen las características más significativas, de los realizados por los maestros más representativos y de los que catalogamos como obras populares, muchas veces investigadas de una torpeza interpretativa que, si bien acusan la distancia mental existente entre la realización y la comprensión de los modelos, ponen al descubierto una ingenuidad transformadora llena de encantos arcaizantes, y al mismo tiempo, de ingenua sensibilidad".
Carlos F. Duarte presenta la "Historia y Evolución del Retablo en la Provincia de Venezuela". Es un serio trabajo de investigación donde lo erudito y lo dialéctico se mezclan armoniosamente. En estas páginas se reseña todo el proceso que da origen a la aparición del retablo en el país, un fenómeno inscrito en la ebanistería del período hispánico, dentro del cual "la sección referente a la construcción de retablos merece especial atención". En Venezuela, las expresiones de mayor significado de aquella artesanía se hallan precisamente en esos muebles. El carácter marcadamente arquitectónico de sus diseños inspiraron, paradójicamente, no pocas fachadas de edificios religiosos. Duarte, subraya las diferencias que existen entre nuestros retablos y los de México y Perú: "Las imágenes -expresa-, ya sea de pincel o de esculturas, conservaron siempre una individualidad propia. Aunque formando parte de la obra en sí no se confundían con ella. Caso diferente al de los exuberantes retablos mexicanos o peruanos, donde la obra pintada o esculpida se funde con las tallas del mueble, formando, por decirlo así, una sola pieza invisible. Por ello se puede afirmar que los retablos venezolanos tienen características propias".
