To put together the characteristics of the colonial Iberoamerican period is a task that has been undertaken many times in the past. Famous architectural historians Angulo Iñiguez, Marco Dorta, Mario Buschiazzo, George Kubler, Leopoldo Castedo, Damián Bayón, Ramón Gutiérrez and Santiago Sebastián have devoted themselves to consulting sources and analyzing phenomena to reach a better understanding of their subjects. This book focuses, studies and analyzes the same phenomena; here sixteen historians are brought together to write about their experiences in their country of origin, where they were born, studied and lived.

Evidently contrasts exist in each architect’s point of view, but this adds its value because each author identifies himself with his country, his history and his patrimony. There are countries with fewer colonial monuments not to be compared, for example, with the amazing number of Mexico. In spite of this, the fewer number of samples has value on a national scale. Another point favoring the differences is provided by the same Iberamerican colonial architecture, which at the end shows its specific character in that originated in several parts of Europe, not only in Spain and Portugal. Typical Spanish influences mingle with Flemish, Italian, French, German and Austrian, producing works that would be unable to be produced in Europe. In some cases, the contribution, though rigid, of the indigenous artisan offers a different but notable effect. This book offers a new view with variation, identified with the feeling of each country.

This original idea allowed the publisher to structure the work, and without a doubt is a different contribution to the comprehension of Iberamerican colonial architecture. Without the collaboration of all the architects, it would have been impossible to assemble the totality of opinions that provide diversity.

Reunir en un libro las características arquitectónicas del período colonial iberoamericano, es tarea que ya se ha cumplido varias veces.Ya la llevaron a cabo destacados historiadores y esas dedicaciones representan hoy las fuentes obligadas de consulta para el mejor entendimiento del tema. Angulo Iñiguez, Marco Dorta, Mario Buschiazzo, George Kubler, Leopoldo Castedo, Damián Bayón, Ramón Gutiérrez y Santiago Sebastián destacan entre los historiadores que han enfrentado el análisis total del denómeno arquitectónico iberpamericano. Este libro, también enfoca, estudia y analiza el mismo feneomeno, pero, a diferencia de las obras de los investigardores arriba mencionados, aquí el autor no es uno sólo ni es uno sólo el criterio interpretativo. La distinción de esta obra, por lo tanto, es la de haber reunido un grupo de historiadores de reconocida trayectoria en cada uno de los países en que residen.

Sin duda se advierten diferencias interpretativas y enfoques a veces contrastantes, sin embargo, lo que pudiera paracer un defecto, más bien resulta un mérito. En efecto, cada autor se identifica con su país, su historia y su patrimonio. Hay países que tienen un listado reducido de monumentos coloniales, incomparable, por ejemplo, con la abrumadora avalancha de ejemplos que ostenta un país como México. A pesar de ello, el muestrario reducido se valoriza a escala nacional y eso se desprende en varias de las aportaciones. Otro punto a favor de las diferencias lo proporciona la misma arquitectura colonial iberamericana que, en fin de cuenta, revela su especifidad en la sume de aportes diferences. Se trata de una expresión arquitectónica transmitida, con orígenes de varias partes de Europa y no solo de España y Portugal. Influencias formales españolas conviven con otras de origen flamenco, italiano, francés, alemán y austriaco, para producir obras que dificilmente hubieran podido darse en Europa. En varias de ellas, además, el aporte aún rígido del artesano indígena imprime un sello diferenciador notable.

Más que un enfoque nuevo ofrezco un enfoque variado e indentificatorio con el sentir de cada país. Esta fue la idea inicial que me permitió estructurar la presente obra y que, sin dudas, también significará un aporte diferente.
